# How to choose your server region?

[Corresponding web page](https://wisphost.com/blog/hosting-region-selection/)

The region closest to your office is not necessarily the right one for your application. The choice depends on the users, the data consulted and the paths required for each response.

Topic: Infrastructure.

## The short answer

Choose the region by taking into account your users, your data and the application's dependencies, then verify performance through representative tests. Then compare the configurations and their final cost in each available region, without inferring a guaranteed latency from the country alone.

- Geographic proximity is a starting point, not a network measurement.
- Exchanges between application and database can matter as much as the visitors' path.
- Compare prices with the same configuration and the same options.

## Describe your application's paths

List the main user groups from your known requirements, then the services used: database, file storage, API or GPU processing. A complete journey often involves several exchanges. Placing them on different continents can add round trips to each operation.

For an interactive service, the users' path is essential. For a computation that imports a large dataset, the file transfer time may matter more. Describe the main scenario before ranking regions by preference.

## Test the right protocol from the right places

Ask for the testing options suited to the configuration you are considering. A representative HTTPS request, a file transfer and a database connection do not measure the same thing. An isolated ping therefore does not sum up the time a user needs to get their response.

Repeat the tests from the relevant locations and at several times. Also record errors and the spread of times, not just the best result. Browser performance tools distinguish, among other things, DNS resolution, connection and the resource reception steps.

## Keep your dependencies in the comparison

Moving only the application without examining its database may change a path instead of shortening it. Many small successive requests make round trips particularly visible. Test the complete journey with the services actually used, rather than a simple static page.

For a GPU server, examine the location of the data, the size of transfers and the frequency of results to retrieve. Also consider backup copies and their restoration. The advertised port throughput does not guarantee the throughput observed on all these paths.

## Which regions to compare at WispHost?

The VPS and GPU catalog offers six regions. Dedicated servers are limited to Bucharest, Amsterdam and Zurich. This difference must be factored into your selection: the presence of a city in one range does not prove that all other ranges are available there.

| Region | VPS / GPU | Dedicated |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Bucharest | In the catalog | In the catalog |
| Amsterdam | In the catalog | In the catalog |
| Zurich | In the catalog | In the catalog |
| Reykjavik | In the catalog | Not offered |
| Kuala Lumpur | In the catalog | Not offered |
| Panama City | In the catalog | Not offered |

## Compare the final regional price

The same server does not always have the same price depending on its region. Compare the final amount shown by the selector rather than inferring a price from the location alone. The summary lists the server, region, duration and options selected for your order.

Use the selector to read the final amount, then keep the same duration and the same options during the comparison. Duration discounts apply to VPS and dedicated servers; GPU are billed monthly. A price difference does not constitute a ranking of latency or performance.

## Retain verifiable criteria

Draw up a short list: availability of the range, your test results, data location, cost and terms of service. If a contractual or data-processing constraint applies to your business, have it verified for the chosen solution. The name of a country is not enough to establish this compliance.

Finally, record the assumptions that guided your decision and the points to confirm with the team before going live. You can repeat the comparison if your audience, dependencies or data volume change, without relying on an old measurement that has become unrepresentative.
